
This two-day workshop is designed for all of those who already practice ice climbing or have attended a basic course but want to improve their safety management experience on this type of terrain. It is an important workshop for all those who want to become independent on this type of terrain. You will learn how to solidify climbing techniques but also learn how to manage the surrounding environment, which is critical to climb safely.
Learning Topics
- Genral climb preparation strategies such as material preparation and risk management
- Environment Management
- Use of tools (ice axes: supported, supported and hooked, extraction of the ice axe, and use of crampons)
- Climbing technique: fundamental progression and basic positions
- Climbing technique: triangle progression and variations
- Rope Management: Learn to lead and manage the roped party based on the terrain and the surrounding environment
- Insertion and extraction of protection materials
- Material management and arrangement of material on the harness
- Refamiliarization with basic knots such as the figure-8, clove hitch, and mountaineer's hitch
- Stops (semi-mobile/fixed)
- Progression of the roped team (arrival at the belay team, recovery of the seconds of the rope team, departure from the belay station)
- Management of all climbing parties and materials
- Independent repelling (sequential rappels on abalakov)
- Self-rescue in an avalanche (use of ARTVA, probe and shovel)

Prerequisite Skills
For all those who already climb on ice or for those who have already attended a basic ice climbing course. Climbers need to be capable of climbing safety as lead on grade WI 3 (slope of 50°/60°, possible ice jumps at 70°/ 80°, generally solid ice, and interspersed with rest points.)
