The Gran Sasso of Italy (or simply known as Gran Sasso) is the highest mountain range within the larger Appennine Mountain Range.
It is located entirely in Abruzzo, in the easternmost ridge of the Abruzzo Apennines, on the border between the provinces of L'Aquila, Teramo and Pescara.
The Gran Sasso is the most iconic mountain range of the Abruzzo region, which culminate in the highest peak of Corno Grande (2912m), as well as Corno Piccolo, Pizzo d'Intermesoli and Monte Camicia.
It hosts the Calderone glacier, the only one in the Apennines as well as the southernmost in Europe, and is flanked to the south by the Campo Imperatore plateau, an endless high-altitude karst land (between 1600 and over 2000 metres) of breathtaking beauty, the closest thing to Tibet you can find in Europe.
With its 150,000 hectares of extension, the Gran Sasso and Monti della Laga National Park is one of the largest parks in Italy.
Dizzying rocky walls, slender towers, peaks, ravines and valleys, gentle slopes and tormented slopes.
These landscapes preserve extraordinary plants and very rare animals: such as the Abruzzo chamois, the Apennine wolf, and the Marsican brown bear.
And breathtaking views to cross in the territory of the Gran Sasso Monti della Laga National Park.
Climbing, climbing, climbing… this is usually what goes on in a climber's brain.
From the stupendous compact slabs eroded by water and time of the Shoulders, of the Monolith, of the II° Pizza Pilastro of Intermesoli and of the Torrione Cambi, we move on to the often overhanging cracks of the east of the Corno Piccolo, to the typically dolomitic dihedrals and cracks of the east of the Western summit of Corno Grande.
The feedback I received all agreed in saying: "magnificent place, you really have to go there".
